Doctoral Dissertation – Research and Preparation

Objectives

Students acquire knowledge about the structure and form of writing a doctoral dissertation. Doing a
doctoral dissertation, students gain scientific experience of creative work, writing papers where they
explain problems, implemented methods, procedures and results. They also give a new scientific
contribution to the development of science. Furthermore, the aim of the process and defence of a
doctoral dissertation is to develop students’ ability to publicly present the results of independent work, as
well as to respond to comments and questions related to the given topic.

Outcomes

Students are prepared for a systematic approach to solving given problems, conducting analyses,
applying the acquired and accepting knowledge from other areas in order to find a creative solution to a
given problem. Independently studying and solving tasks, students acquire new scientific
knowledge about the complexity of problems. Writing a doctoral dissertation, students gain certain
experiences that they can apply when solving problems in their field. Preparing the results for
the public defence, defending the thesis and answering to the questions and remarks of the commission,
students gain the necessary experience in presenting the results of independent or collective work.

Content of the course

It is formed individually in accordance with the needs and the area covered by the given topic of the
doctoral dissertation. Students, in agreement with a mentor, prepare the doctoral dissertation in written form, in
accordance with the Regulations on doctoral studies and the Regulations on the preparation and defence
of the doctoral dissertation and doctoral art project. Students prepare and defend a written doctoral
dissertation publicly in agreement with the mentor and in accordance with the stated rules and
procedures. The course forms an integral whole with the course [20.9200] Doctoral dissertation –
preparation and defence of the dissertation.
